It’s the first question almost every new trader asks. The honest answer: you can start learning with $0, and you should.

Start with a simulator

Every major platform offers paper trading. Use it until you can follow your own rules for several weeks in a row. If you can’t make money with fake money, real money won’t fix it.

When you go live

What you need depends on the market:

  • Stocks: In the US, pattern day trader (PDT) rules have long required $25,000 in a margin account to day trade frequently. These rules have been under review, so check your broker’s current requirements. Swing trading isn’t affected.
  • Futures: Micro contracts let you trade with much smaller accounts, often a few thousand dollars.
  • Prop firms: Evaluation fees let you trade firm capital without risking a large personal account.

The real requirement

The money matters less than the rules. Start small, risk 1% or less per trade, and treat your first year as tuition.
